The Ancient Masonic Order of Alfred the Great is appendant to the Masonic Order of Athelstan in England, Wales and Provinces Overseas and has its own Statutes. It is a separate reward-based Order, recognising meritorious service by members of the Order of Athelstan within the Constitution of England, Wales and Provinces Overseas.
The ritual of the Order commemorates the role of Alfred the Great in paving the way for the succession of Athelstan. Members hold one of three progressive grades: Knight (KAG), Knight Commander (KCAG) or Knight Grand Cross (GCAG), and naturally can only use the associated honorifics in the context of the Masonic Order of Athelstan.
The Head of the Ancient Order is the Grand Master for the time being of the Masonic Order of Athelstan in England, Wales and Provinces Overseas, taking the title Sovereign Grand Master (SGM) of the Ancient Order. The SGM may appoint a Grand High Chancellor to assist him. A small number of Grand Chancellors are also appointed to assist the Grand High Chancellor.
